Balancing Body Building and Mixed Martial Arts


Bodybuilding and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) are quite similar in many ways, yet there is a subtle difference between the two. MMA requires an adrenaline rush and calculative movements which is not part of what happens when you are body building in the gym. The approaches are both are quite different right down to the diet. Here is how you can combine both of them to get the best of both worlds.
The goals for both forms are different. In MMA you are looking for speed and agility as well as presence of mind. In body building you look for strength, aesthetics as well as hypertrophy. Bodybuilders need huge amounts of protein for body mass, whereas MMA fighters need to keep their weight under control.
You can definitely try to combine the training for both, though practicing two different forms in one session may not really make sense. If you are training for a fight then working with MMA routines would be a good idea. If you going into competitive mode then getting into body building would make more sense, though you should not completely give up on the MMA routines. As a rule of thumb following three days of MMA with three days of bodybuilding will work out brilliantly for you. Depending on the kind of event you have coming up, going with a mix of 5 sessions of either one will work good.
Diet is something that you will have to pay extra attention to. You will have to strike a balance in your diet based on the routine you are following. Your focus should be more on carbs that are low in glycemic content. Opt for chicken instead of fish. Use a protein shake as a night time drink as it can work on repairing your body while you rest.
If you alter your training a bit to suit the sport you are working towards, you can get a great mix of MMA and bodybuilding. Your aim should be to strengthen your core as this will provide protection to your internal organs as well as give you the agility you will need. Look more strength than for endurance or you will not be able to condition yourself well. If you are just starting on this, go with bodybuilding and supplementation first and then switch to MMA before you have put on more than necessary weight.
The key is to find the balance and not give up on any one of the sport forms that you like.
